The Walter Tishma Way (WTW) is a 42-mile Inn-to-Inn hiking route from Estes Park to Allenspark that travels mostly through Rocky Mountain National Park. Lodging is diverse and makes use of what can be accessed along the way, whether an intimate B&B, a historical lodge with bathroom down the hall, a rustic cabin, or a dude ranch. Luggage is transferred to the next destination so walkers can travel light with just a daypack.
Hiking mileage is between 7 and 12 miles per day with elevation gains between 1500 and 2600 feet. Nothing is technical and there are some days with easier options. Extra days can be added and are encouraged.
Self-guided packages are offered. Footpaths also offers daily guide service.
With 83 people completing the trail in the summer of 2007, this new way of hiking appeals to baby-boomers looking to get back into the outdoors. There's plenty of adventure, but in the evening efforts are rewarded with cold beer, hot showers, a nice meal with a bottle of wine and a comfy bed.
One word of warning. Long-distance hiking is addictive.
